Five Caltrans trouble spots plague Malibu-area PCH Play

Caltrans has five major problems right now in the Malibu area. Ratner Beach is just one of them.

At the eastern Malibu city limits, at Tuna Beach, Caltrans continues work on a major cliff protection project under the highway. They've been at work there for several weeks.

At Big Rock, a major hole has worked itself around the loads of concrete that Caltrans has already pumped down there to protect the highway — and to protect Malibu's only supply of water.

At Carbon Beach, across the highway from the fire station, the dirt under a burned-out house has collapsed in heavy surf. No word from Caltrans yet on that one.

And out west of town, at the Giant Sand Dune and at Deer Creek Road, massive holes on the side of the road are eating into the shoulders right up to the traffic lane heading toward Malibu.

California State Parks is also losing the section of parking lot west of the point at Leo Carrillo State Beach. That would be Point Sequit, the scenic beach just below the bluffs west of Mulholland Highway.
