LAPD shoots robbery suspect, shuts down 405 Freeway

Northbound 405 closed at Howard Hughes Parkway after pursuit ended in officer-involved shooting, snarling Westside traffic.

By Hans Laetz

The 405 Freeway was closed to all northbound traffic at Howard Hughes Parkway this morning after LAPD shot a suspected robber on the freeway at the end of a high-speed pursuit.

The pursuit followed a robbery at the 7-Eleven at Manchester Avenue and Airport Boulevard at 4:15 a.m. The suspect fled onto the northbound 405 and stopped in the carpool lane near Howard Hughes Parkway. A body was seen on TV stringer video.

Afterwards, traffic jammed up on all the streets on the Westside — heavy backups on Lincoln, Sepulveda and especially La Cienega. Traffic was also slow heading in the opposite direction toward LAX.

As of 8:30 a.m., when we recorded this, the freeway was closed. The 405 was expected to reopen before our noon newscast playback. Usually we update our noon newscast — that was not possible this morning.
