Earth Month is here. Malibu's city government plans a series of events focused on recycling, waste reduction, water conservation, and energy efficiency. The Malibu focus is on sustainable practices integrated into the fire recovery process.

Malibu's dark sky ordinance will be featured — an ordinance that frankly most people do not know about. The city has rules against light pollution, such as unshielded light bulbs or lights left on all night. This month, the city will post tips on social media and encourage residents to share photos of Malibu's dark skies.

In two weeks, the city will host a talk by Pepperdine University professor Dr. Anna Jacobsen about how California's chaparral ecosystem is adapted to periodic fire. She will explain how hotter droughts and more frequent burns are testing the resilience of chaparral in the local area. That's April 15th at City Hall.

A household hazmat and e-waste collection day is set for Saturday, April 18th at City Hall. That will include the ever-popular Document Shredding Day. Again, that's Saturday, April 18th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The next day, the city will give away pollinator plants for people to add to their biome. The giveaway is cosponsored by the Pollinator Protection Fund and the City of Malibu. It's Sunday, April 19, starting at 10:30 at Legacy Park.

And leading climate change advocate, author, and journalist Bill McKibben will speak at the Malibu Speakers Series on April 22 at Pepperdine University.

Other events are also scheduled. Full details at the city's website — search for Malibu City Earth Month.
