NTSB Chief: Hands-Free Driving Systems Don't Improve Safety

Jennifer Homendy says drivers grow too reliant on driver-assist cameras and pay more attention to phones than the road.

The head of the National Transportation Safety Board says cars that have cameras to allow drivers to take their hands off the wheel are convenient. But they do not improve safety.

Jennifer Homendy said people become too reliant on them. Drivers end up paying more attention to their cellphones and infotainment screens than to the road.

The NTSB held hearings yesterday into two fatal crashes — these two involving Ford's Blue Cruise system.

The NTSB chief said automakers need to do more to improve the way these systems monitor drivers, and the government should establish minimum safety standards.
