Santa Monica College has won permission to offer a four-year college degree in cloud computing.

A state agency has approved the four-year program, and SMC will enroll its first students this fall.

Howard Stahl is the chair of SMC's Computer Science & Information Systems department, and he helped develop the baccalaureate curriculum.

Stahl says the growth in cloud computing is the frontier of computer science engineering, and SMC is riding that wave. Companies like Amazon, with billions of dollars in revenue.

This is the second four-year degree authorized for SMC, which as a community college usually is viewed as a two-year institution. The other four-year degree is in interaction design.
