Topanga Lagoon restoration designs to be unveiled Wednesday

The latest plans for a major environmental improvement and construction project on PCH at the eastern end of town will be unveiled Thursday night. This is a major parks project — a reconstruction of the Topanga Lagoon, the coastal estuary that was filled in with dirt and a PCH bridge 100 years ago.

The Resources Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains has plans to rebuild the lagoon and connect Topanga Creek to the ocean. That would be a vital link for ocean-going salmon in the creek. Those fish are all on vacation in Santa Barbara right now — they were evacuated after the fire wrecked their habitat, but the plan is to bring them back after the fire effects stabilize.

Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m., there is a big unveiling for the updated project designs. The government is asking for community feedback even though the designs are 90 percent finished but not yet released — they're waiting for the big reveal.

This will be a new entrance to Malibu, completely rearranged, down at the corner of Topanga Canyon Boulevard at PCH, not to mention a new bridge to be installed by Caltrans over the creek. Caltrans has a frankly disastrous track record with similar bridge projects at Trancas and the Solstice Creek project, which still isn't finished years after it was promised.

LA County officials will invite the public to a virtual meeting Thursday night from 6 to 8 p.m. Go on the web and look for Topanga Lagoon Restoration Project for more.
