Trader Joe's expanding on Westside — but still not Malibu

The chain is seeking liquor licenses for the old Fox Venice theater on Lincoln Boulevard and continues to pursue a third Santa Monica store.

Trader Joe's is continuing its expansion across the Westside. But no, no plans for Malibu.

The beloved chain — owned by a German chain and now further encircling Malibu — is asking for liquor licenses to open up in the former Fox Venice theater property on Lincoln Boulevard.

The Fox Venice theater opened in 1951. It fell on hard times in the 60s. It was eventually repurposed as the Fox Discount Store indoor swap meet, but it's been empty for at least the past few years.

Trader Joe's is still trying to convert a former drug store at 14th and Wilshire in Santa Monica into another Santa Monica outlet. That would be number three.
