Trump endorsement of Hilton may upend California GOP primary

Political observers say the president's backing of podcaster Steve Hilton could push Chad Bianco out and clear a path for Democrats.

President Donald Trump may have just ensured a Democratic victory in the California gubernatorial election.

Last night, the president endorsed conservative podcaster Steve Hilton for California governor.

"He is a truly fine man, one who has watched as this once great State has gone to Hell," Trump posted on his semi-official news outlet, Truth.

His endorsement of Hilton may knock another Republican, Chad Bianco, out of the race, by allowing a Democrat to beat Bianco in the top-two primary this spring.

Political commentators across the state are saying that Trump's endorsement might lead California Republican voters to coalesce behind Hilton, and Bianco may finish third in the June primary election.

Just look at what happened in 2018 in California. Trump endorsed some guy named John Cox, which helped cement him as the GOP frontrunner. Cox finished second and got trounced in the November runoff by Gavin Newsom.

The Trump endorsement may have just flushed the chances for a 1-2 Republican finish this June — with eight Democrats splitting the rest of the field — down a gold-plated toilet.
