The Canaan Fire is still described as 146 acres as of 7 a.m., but there are indications that mop-up has begun and that the fire is not spreading. The fire chief says 100 houses are directly under fire threat as of Friday morning.
That threat could grow as winds increase as predicted. Winds are increasing right now — gusts of 45 to 50 mph are being recorded at the tops of the mountains in the Malibu area.
414 firefighters are assigned to groundwork here in Malibu. Super Scoopers are still working the fire Friday morning. Fire crews from CAL FIRE and Ventura County are helping Los Angeles County put out the fire, along with people from the California Highway Patrol, the County Office of Emergency Management, and the American Red Cross, which has set up an evacuation center in Agoura Hills.
No smoke or flames were visible as the sun rose Friday morning. Some of the crews are entering the mop-up phase. One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital in satisfactory condition, according to the fire chief.
The fire is still burning south of Mulholland Highway, north of Encinal Canyon Road, west of the juvenile detention center, and east of the abandoned Malibu Country Club. This is in upper Trancas Creek, the drainage area along Encinal Canyon Road, west of Canaan Road and east of La Chusa.
