Malibu school district split flying under the radar this election

The biggest political issue in Malibu has gone unmentioned in legislative campaigns as ballots hit mailboxes.

We have not heard much from the Santa Monica-Malibu school separation issue.

Malibu's petition to split out of the Santa Monica school district has advanced to the state Board of Education, a largely-anonymous panel in Sacramento that will take years to make a decision.

School activists in Malibu are hoping to get a special law passed in Sacramento that would bypass the lengthy review and settle complicated tax issues.

But as we just reported, the makeup of the state Assembly and Senate is very much in toss-up mode. A Republican governor and/or Republican local senator and assemblymember might alter the power equation significantly.

Voting starts this week, with ballots mailed out to Malibu voters. And the Malibu school district creation issue — the biggest political issue in Malibu — is flying under the radar.
