Malibu voters head to polls Monday and Tuesday

Four Malibu polling stations open Monday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a city council race topping the local ballot.

Tuesday is the final day of ther election, and it's a safe bet that most Malibu residents have already voted, either by mail or in person at a voting center.

Locally, the most significant vote is the city council race.

There are two incumbents seeking a second term — Marianne Riggins and Doug Stewart. They face separate challenges from two opponents, Sam Dibaei and Danny Smith.

Of those two, Smith has been endorsed by some of the people who call themselves Protect Malibu, including incumbent council member Bruce Silverstein, who's leaving office in two years.

Riggins and Stewart say they are counting on voter support for their progress on major issues like fire recovery, public safety, and school district separation.

Statewide, the latest reliable poll in the governor's race shows little change: Xavier Becerra, the Democrat, at 61 percent, and Steve Hilton, the Republican, at around 37 percent. Another reliable statewide poll shows Becerra with a 27-point margin above Hilton.

There is one other statewide race with a local connection: State Senator Ben Allen, a former member of the Santa Monica-Malibu School Board, is now running for state insurance commissioner.

There's one correction to the official information from voting officials about the location of one set of polls. The voting station supposedly at Malibu High School is actually next door at Malibu Middle School.

Just look for the flags out on Morning View Drive and you'll find it.

All four polling stations in Malibu opened Monday at 10 a.m. and are open until 7 p.m. Those polling stations are Malibu Middle School, the church at the corner of PCH and Ramirez, the Malibu Library, and Malibu City Hall.

On Election Day, Tuesday, they open at 7 a.m. and stay open until 8 p.m.

Every vote center in Los Angeles County — all 646 of them — has the same hours, and you can vote at any voting station in L.A. County if you're registered to vote here.

National election returns will start coming in at around 6 p.m. Tuesday night. KBUU will broadcast the Democracy Now coverage starting at 6 p.m. and running until about 10 p.m.

If any local city council results come in, we'll break in with those, but don't count on significant results from Malibu until around 11, 12, or 1 o'clock overnight. Complete election coverage begins at 4:55 a.m. Wednesday.
