Stewart calls Silverstein endorsement of challenger unusually negative

Councilmember says he doesn't recall any Malibu councilmember running such a public campaign to unseat colleagues.

By Hans Laetz

On Sunday, KBUU reported that city council member Bruce Silverstein endorsed a city council candidate seeking to unseat two sitting council members this year.

Silverstein endorsed Danny Smith, a political newcomer who wants to unseat either Marianne Riggins or Doug Stewart. Silverstein said a vote for Smith is a vote for the policies of Silverstein and his political ally, Steve Uhring.

Stewart says he is disappointed in Silverstein.

Quote: "I don't recall such a public, negative campaign endorsement in any previous elections."

Quoting again: "Typically, Malibu councilmembers don't take such an active, highly negative approach to unseating their fellow councilmembers."

Those are the words of Doug Stewart responding to Bruce Silverstein. Council member Marianne Riggins chose not to comment to KBUU News.
