Malibu warns of email scams impersonating City Hall

Fake invoices targeting older adults and fire survivors appear to come from city commissions or committees.

By Hans Laetz

Malibu officials are urging the public not to fall for fake emails from criminals pretending to be from the city.

An official statement says the city has intercepted multiple email scams that appear to come from the city. These scams often target older adults and fire survivors.

In some cases, it appears that fake invoices are being mailed out from supposed city commissions or committees. The city is urging people not to click on any supposed invoice supposedly coming from the city.

If you get such a bill in your email, the city says you should contact City Hall to let them know about the scam. The city wants to review and track the scam, and coordinate with the LA County Sheriff's Department.
