High surf pounds Malibu beaches as tides keep climbing

The Malibu Pier remains closed and tides will rise nightly through Sunday, with more swell predicted next Tuesday.

By Hans Laetz

High surf continues to roll ashore on Malibu's south-facing beaches. No major incidents have been reported here, but a 5-year-old girl was washed into the ocean in Laguna Beach. There is no sign of her body.

The Malibu Pier remains closed. No visible damage to the landmark could be seen.

Today's high tide hits 7.4 feet at 6:47 p.m. The high tides are increasing with the lunar cycle, hitting around sunset, about a half hour later each night.

By Sunday night, we will see an 8.5-foot high tide at 9:05 p.m. This period of high waves will continue the next two or three days. More large swell is predicted next Tuesday.
