Malibu traffic crashes up 33%, tickets more than double
Sheriff's deputies wrote 13,470 traffic tickets in the first three months of 2026, more than twice last year's pace.
Traffic crashes in Malibu are up 33 percent over the same month one year ago. And there has been a huge increase in the number of traffic tickets written.
Sheriff's deputies issued 13,470 traffic tickets in the first three months of this year — more than double the rate of last year.
Parking tickets have increased from just over 3,200 in March to almost 4,700 in February.
CHP officers patrolling PCH in Malibu wrote 149 tickets in March for equipment violations. Those are almost all usually for loud mufflers or illegal exhaust systems. And 244 motorists got zapped for holding up their cellphones while driving.
The CHP is brought in at Malibu taxpayer expense — more than a million dollars a year — to supplement the L.A. County sheriff's deputies who are hired as the city's general police department. The two agencies work together.
